MOV video file format guide

MOV is the QuickTime container format. It can package video, audio, text tracks and metadata, while the codecs inside determine whether a device or browser can decode the file.

QuickTime container and codecs

MOV describes the structure around media tracks, not one required video codec. A MOV file may contain H.264, HEVC, ProRes or another codec, so validate both the container and its streams.

Test media uploads

Use a MOV sample to confirm extension checks, MIME handling, thumbnail creation and upload limits. Some services accept an MP4 but reject a MOV even when the media streams are similar.

Check playback compatibility

Browser and device support depends on the included codecs and audio tracks. Preview each fixture in the same environments your visitors or customers use.

Inspect metadata and tracks

MOV files can store timing, dimensions, edit information and multiple media tracks. Inspecting a fixture helps verify that an upload or conversion preserves the properties your workflow needs.

Compare MOV and MP4

MOV and MP4 use related box-based structures, but they are distinct containers. Testing both files helps catch extension-based validation and container-specific playback behavior.

MOV sample video questions

What is a MOV file?

MOV is Apple’s QuickTime multimedia container. It can hold video, audio, text tracks and metadata in a single file.

Is MOV the same as MP4?

No. MOV and MP4 are related container formats, but browsers, upload validators and media tools can treat them differently.

Which codecs can a MOV file contain?

MOV can contain several codecs. Inspect the streams in a specific file instead of assuming its codec from the .mov extension.

Can I use these files to test an upload form?

Yes. Use a sample to test file selection, MIME detection, upload limits, transcoding and playback in your own workflow.
