WebP is an image format developed for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, plus transparency and animation. Depending on the image and encoding settings, WebP can provide a smaller download than comparable JPEG or PNG files.
Lossy WebP can reduce file size by approximating some visual information. Lossless WebP preserves the encoded image data exactly. Choose the mode based on whether smaller files or exact pixel recovery matters most.
WebP supports alpha transparency in both lossy and lossless modes, and can store animated frames. These samples are still photos; use an animated WebP when you need a multi-frame image.
A quality setting is an encoder control, not a universal visual score. The samples use different photos and dimensions, so compare their file sizes as practical examples rather than a controlled same-image benchmark.
WebP is a raster image format designed for web use. The .webp file extension and image/webp media type identify this format.
It supports both. Lossy encoding can create smaller files by discarding some image information, while lossless encoding allows the original encoded pixels to be recovered exactly.
Yes. WebP supports alpha transparency and multi-frame animation, in addition to ordinary still images.
It depends on the image and your needs. WebP can offer efficient file sizes and supports transparency, but JPEG or PNG may be preferable for a particular workflow or older software. Test the image in the browsers and apps you support.
File size depends on the image content, pixel dimensions and encoder settings. These examples use five different photos and sizes, so they illustrate realistic WebP files rather than a direct comparison of formats.
